Why is my GE dishwasher not draining?

Common GE dishwasher drain failures
Clogged filter on Profile and Cafe models
Twist counterclockwise to release the filter, rinse under hot water with dish soap, scrub with a soft brush, and reinstall. Twist clockwise to lock. That's it. Do this before pulling the machine out for anything else.
Drain hose kinked or improperly routed
GE's drain hose connection sits at the bottom of the back panel. Push the dishwasher back too hard and the hose pinches. Pull the kick plate off and trace the hose route. It should arc up under the counter (high loop) before connecting to the disposal or drain. Straighten any kinks and clip the high loop in place.
Garbage disposal knockout plug
Same issue as every other brand. If a new disposal was installed and the dishwasher drain connects to it, the plastic knockout plug inside the disposal inlet must be removed. Skipping that step is one of the top causes of "new dishwasher won't drain" calls.
Drain pump impeller jam
GE drain pump impeller blades jam easily on broken glass, fruit pits, or label paper. With the filter removed, shine a flashlight into the pump cavity. Use needle-nose pliers to pull any visible debris. The impeller should spin freely by hand when clear.
Drain pump motor failure

Check valve stuck or control board fault
Older GE dishwashers have a one-way check valve between the pump and drain hose that can stick closed over time. Newer GE Profile units have smart drain monitoring driven by the main control board. When the board fails, drain commands don't reach the pump and you'll see a CL or similar code on the display. A control board is the higher-cost repair on this list, because the board itself is the expensive part, not the labor.
How to fix a GE dishwasher not draining
Run through these in order. Most GE drain problems are solved by step three.
- Towel out standing water. Clear the tub so you can work.
- Pull and clean the filter (Profile and Cafe models). Twist counterclockwise to release. Rinse under hot water, scrub, reinstall. Twist clockwise to lock.
- Check the drain hose behind the dishwasher. Pull the kick plate, inspect the hose route. Look for kinks, confirm a high loop is in place before the disposal or sink connection.
- Verify the disposal knockout plug. Disconnect the drain hose from the disposal inlet and look inside for a plastic disc. Knock it out with a screwdriver if it's still there.
- Inspect the pump impeller. With the filter removed, look into the pump cavity with a flashlight. Remove any glass, pits, or label debris with needle-nose pliers.
- Check the display for error codes. GE Profile and Cafe show codes like CL, BL, or H2O when drain or fill faults occur. Look up the specific code for your model.
- Force a drain cycle. On most modern GE dishwashers, press and hold Start/Reset for 3 seconds to trigger drain-only. The unit pumps out water for 90 seconds. If nothing happens, the pump motor has likely failed.
