The 31 models named in the LG class-action settlement

These are the model stems covered by Bentley v. LG Electronics U.S.A. in the US District Court for the District of New Jersey, for units produced between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2017. Retail model numbers add a finish letter — LFXS30766S for stainless, D for black stainless — and a suffix like /00 or /01 for the production revision. The claims deadline was 5 February 2021 and it has passed. The list still matters because it tells you whether your unit is from the production window the complaints centred on.

One thing to be clear about: there has never been a safety recall of LG refrigerators for compressor failure. The only LG refrigerator recall on the Consumer Product Safety Commission record is from 2005 and covered a condenser fan motor — a different part, a different decade. What happened here was a class-action settlement. If a website tells you your refrigerator is "under recall," that is wrong, and it is worth weighing the rest of what that site tells you.

You can hear it running, but nothing gets cold

Do this right now

Move meat, dairy and medication to a cooler now. Keep the doors shut — a closed cabinet holds temperature for hours, an opened one does not.

What it actually is

This is the signature LG linear-compressor failure, and it is the reason so many of these get misdiagnosed. On an ordinary compressor a mechanical failure stops the motor: it hums, trips the overload, and you hear it struggling. A linear compressor is a piston on springs driven directly by an inverter, with no crankshaft and no rotation. When the piston, the spring or the discharge valve fails, the motor keeps oscillating exactly as commanded — so the refrigerator still hums and vibrates and sounds completely normal. It just is not pumping. It will usually show no error code at all, and the compressor can pass every electrical test on a meter while being mechanically dead.

How we test it

Line temperatures first: the discharge line and condenser should sit roughly 20°F above ambient with the suction line noticeably cooler. All three at room temperature means nothing is circulating. Gauges then separate the two possibilities — near-zero static pressure means the system is empty, normal static pressure that will not pull down means the compressor is not pumping.

No sound at all from the back — lights work inside

Check the breaker and confirm the display does not read Demo or OFF. Showroom mode disables cooling by design and is a genuinely free fix.

What it actually is

Silence means the compressor is never being commanded, or the drive that commands it has failed. On these models that is the inverter board, the main control board, or the harness between them — not the compressor. There is a red LED on the inverter board that blinks a fault count, and reading it is how you tell the difference in about thirty seconds instead of by replacing parts.

How we test it

Blink count read at the board, then Test Mode 1 to force the compressor and fans to maximum. In Test 1 we expect roughly 160–185 VAC out of the drive to a running compressor and a 4–6 VDC command signal coming in from the main board. Below 120 VAC out with the command present puts the fault squarely on the drive.

It quit right after a storm or a power cut

Do this right now

Kill power at the breaker for a full five minutes, then restore it. This is the only reset LG actually publishes, it costs nothing, and it is worth doing exactly once.

What it actually is

Tampa Bay summer storms put spikes on the line, and the inverter board is the most exposed component in the cabinet. A surge does not usually kill the compressor — it kills the board that drives it, or a capacitor on the main control. That is a much smaller repair, and it is why we fit a surge protector on compressor jobs at no charge. If the fault comes back within about three hours of the reset, it is hardware, and every further reset is time your food does not have.

Visual inspection of the boards for heat damage and swollen capacitors, supply voltage and ground verified at the outlet, control signal traced from the main board to the drive.

It cools for a while, then quits, then recovers

Do this right now

Pull the unit out and look at the fan behind the lower rear panel while it is running. If it is stopped or stopping, that is your answer.

What it actually is

An intermittent condenser fan lets the compressor overheat until it shuts itself down on its overload, then cools and restarts. It looks exactly like a failing compressor and is a fraction of the cost. LG has its own code for this — ER CF — and their published note is the giveaway: the code clears on a power cycle and comes back roughly three hours later.

How we test it

Fan motor operation and current draw in Test Mode 1, condenser coil condition and airflow path, compressor shell temperature logged over a full cycle, overload continuity.

Fridge warm, freezer still frozen

Do this right now

Open the freezer and put your hand near the vents at the back. If there is no air moving, the problem is airflow, not refrigeration.

What it actually is

On an LG the fresh-food section is cooled by air pushed over the freezer evaporator, so a warm fridge with a cold freezer is almost never the compressor. In order of likelihood it is a frost slab locking the evaporator fan, a failed evaporator fan motor, a defrost heater or defrost sensor that has stopped clearing that frost, or a damper stuck shut. LG has codes for most of these, and none of them are compressor codes.

How we test it

Rear panel off, frost pattern on the evaporator photographed, fan motor voltage at the connector — 12 VDC with the door switch made, and it should spin up 30–45 seconds later. Then a forced defrost through Test Mode 3, listening for the heater and watching the sensor.

Thick frost or ice on the back wall of the freezer

Do this right now

Do not chip at it with anything metal. Puncturing the evaporator turns a defrost repair into sealed-system work.

What it actually is

Recurring frost means the defrost sequence is losing to the moisture load. The order of suspects is the defrost heater circuit, the defrost sensor, then the door seals letting humid Florida air into the cabinet. LG shows dH, FdH or dHF for the heater circuit and dS for the sensor — and dH gets miscited online as a compressor code constantly. It is not one.

How we test it

Defrost heater resistance and current, sensor behaviour through a live defrost in Test Mode 3, door seal compression around the full perimeter, drain path flow-tested.

Ice maker stopped, but the food is still cold

Confirm the ice maker is switched on and the water supply is open before booking anything. It shuts itself off after a fill fault and stays off.

What it actually is

Ice makers fail in a predictable order on these units — the fill valve, the fill tube or its heater, then the module. If the freezer is holding temperature, the sealed system is fine and this is a self-contained repair that has nothing to do with the compressor.

Fill valve operation and inlet pressure, fill-tube heater continuity, harvest cycle observed, water line and shutoff inspected.

A click from the back every 30–90 seconds

Count the interval and note it. That rhythm is diagnostic information and it is worth telling us on the phone.

What it actually is

On an older LG with a conventional compressor this rhythm is the classic failed start relay — the compressor tries, the overload opens, it cools, it tries again. On a linear-compressor model the picture is different, because a linear compressor has no start winding and no start relay in the traditional sense: the inverter drives it electronically. What clicks on those units is usually the overload protector cutting a compressor that is drawing too much, which points at either the compressor or a low charge. The point is that the same sound means different things on different LG platforms, and guessing costs you a compressor you may not need.

How we test it

Resistance through the compressor connector, which should read 7–14 ohms including the overload, then directly at the compressor terminals, 6–9.2 ohms depending on the compressor. Good at the terminals but open at the connector means the overload has failed and the compressor is fine.

A loud hum or buzz that was not there before

Do this right now

Check that the unit is level and not touching the cabinetry on either side. A built-in fridge transmits every vibration into the millwork.

What it actually is

A linear compressor makes a different sound as it ages than a rotary one does — several owners describe it as the fridge sounding slightly wrong before it stops cooling entirely. Mount grommets harden, the piston runs against a failing spring, or a fan blade goes out of balance. A new hum on a unit that is still cooling is worth a look now rather than after the food is warm.

How we test it

Sound isolated by component with the panels off, compressor mount grommets inspected, fan blades checked for balance and clearance, running current logged — around 0.5–0.7 A is normal on these compressors.

A burning or electrical smell from the back

What it actually is

A burning smell is a wiring, board or overload problem and it is the one symptom on this page that should not wait. In this market it is usually storm-related damage to the inverter board or a connector that has overheated. It does not get better and it is a fire risk.

It runs constantly and never quite gets there

Do this right now

Check the condenser area behind the lower rear grille for dust build-up before anything else. It is free and it is often the whole problem.

What it actually is

A cabinet that cannot reach setpoint is either losing refrigerant, losing heat rejection, or losing compression. A loaded condenser and a failing condenser fan are the cheap causes and get checked first. A slow leak is the expensive one, and on these units LG will eventually flag it as ER CH or ER CL — an inspection code they raise after roughly 24 hours of degraded cooling, which covers a leak, a compressor fault or a valve fault without distinguishing between them.

Condenser condition and fan operation, cabinet and evaporator temperatures logged against target, running current, then gauges if the electrical and airflow side is clean.

The temperature drifts up and down on its own

Do this right now

Photograph the display when it reads high. The number and the time are useful.

What it actually is

Erratic temperatures with the compressor still running usually mean the control is being told the wrong thing. Thermistors drift with age, and LG has separate codes for each one — FS for the freezer sensor, rS and r2 for the refrigerator sensors, rT for ambient. A drifting sensor is an inexpensive part and a common cause of a refrigerator that seems possessed.

The compressor was replaced before and it failed again

Do this right now

Find your paperwork from the first repair. Who did it, when, and whether the filter drier was replaced.

What it actually is

A repeat compressor failure is almost always a process failure rather than a bad part. The current litigation against LG alleges that pinhole corrosion in the evaporator tubing lets refrigerant out and air in, over-pressuring the compressor until the discharge valve fails — which, if true, means the compressor is often the second failure, not the first. Replace the compressor without finding the leak and you get another dead compressor. There is also a documented trap on many of these models: the replacement compressor requires a control-board software update using LG service tooling, and skipping it is a known source of repeat failure complaints.

Full leak search including the previous braze and fitting joints, standing pressure test with dry nitrogen, filter drier condition, and confirmation of whether the model requires the post-replacement software update.

TOOL 3 · WHAT THE CODE ON YOUR DISPLAY MEANS

LG error codes, and the three that get blamed on the compressor by mistake

Start with the single most useful fact on this page: LG publishes no display code that means the compressor has failed. A dead linear compressor very often shows nothing at all. The codes below are LG's own published list — panels show them as "Er CF" or "E CF" depending on the model. Type to filter, or pick a group.

A near-zero standing pressure points at a leak, a normal standing pressure that will not pull down points at the compressor.
CF Fans Condenser fan motor error A machine-compartment fan fault. LG notes it clears on a power cycle and typically returns about three hours later — that timing is the tell for an intermittent fan motor. A stopped condenser fan overheats the compressor and mimics compressor failure exactly.
FF Fans Freezer fan motor error The freezer fan is not turning normally. Often it is frost locking the blade rather than a dead motor, which is why LG suggests a full manual defrost with the doors open before condemning anything. Fridge warm with freezer cold usually starts here.
rF Fans Refrigerator compartment fan motor error This is a FAN code, not a compressor code — it is one of the most commonly miscited codes on the internet. If someone tells you Er rF means your compressor is dead, get a second opinion before you authorise a compressor job.
FU Cooling Freezer compartment fault flagged 10 minutes after startup An early-run check. On a unit that has just been moved or reconnected it can be transient; on one that has been running, treat it as a real cooling fault.
FS Sensors Freezer sensor A thermistor, not a compressor. A drifted freezer sensor makes the control run the compressor at the wrong times and produces temperatures that make no sense.
rS Sensors Refrigerator sensor, upper (R1) Another thermistor. Frequently miscited as a cooling-system fault. Inexpensive part, quick job.
r2 Sensors Refrigerator sensor, lower (R2) The second fresh-food sensor. Same class of fault as rS.
dS Defrost Defrost sensor The sensor that tells the control when defrost has done its job. When it fails, frost builds until airflow stops — which shows up as a warm fridge with a cold freezer.
dH / FdH / dHF Defrost Defrost heater circuit The heater circuit that clears frost off the evaporator. Also routinely miscited online as a compressor code. It is not. Confirmed by running a forced defrost and listening for the heater.
rT Sensors Ambient temperature sensor Reads room temperature so the control can adapt run times. A drifted ambient sensor in a hot Florida garage produces strange cycling behaviour.
IF Ice Ice maker fan On a seven-segment display the capital I renders as a bar, which is why this gets reported online as "Er 1F". There is no 1F on LG published list — if you see it, read it as IF.
IS Ice Ice maker sensor Self-contained ice maker fault. Nothing to do with cooling performance.
It Ice Ice maker motor The harvest motor. Confirmed by watching a forced harvest cycle.
SS Water Water tank sensor Dispenser-side fault only.

gF Water Flow sensor Measures water flow to the dispenser and ice maker. A common cause of slow ice that gets blamed on the freezer.
CO Electronics Main board to display communication error The two boards have stopped talking. Usually the harness or a connector, sometimes a board. The refrigeration may be perfectly fine behind a dead-looking panel.
C1 Electronics Dispenser to display communication error Same class of fault, confined to the dispenser.
Demo / OFF Not a fault Showroom mode — cooling is disabled on purpose Not a failure at all. Demo mode switches off cooling so a floor model stays cool to the touch. It gets triggered by accident and it is one of the few genuinely free fixes on this list. Always worth ruling out before booking a service call.
Lo / HI Not a fault Room temperature outside the operating range Lo appears below about 14°F ambient, HI above about 122°F. Relevant for garage and lanai installations in a Tampa summer, not for a kitchen.

Two codes you will see quoted online that are not on LG's list: "Er 1F" and "F dS". The first is almost certainly IF — the ice maker fan — misread off a seven-segment display where a capital I looks like a bar. The second appears to be a garbled dS. Photograph your display before you call; it saves a visit surprisingly often.

HOW WE ACTUALLY FIX IT

Our 7-Point LG compressor inspection

This is the order the diagnostic runs in on every LG compressor call, from the cheapest possible cause to the most expensive. It exists because the failure modes on these units look identical from the kitchen and cost wildly different amounts to fix — and because the single most expensive mistake in this trade is replacing a compressor that was never the problem. Nothing gets condemned until the step that proves it.

A word on troubleshooting an LG yourself before you call anyone. Checking the display for Demo mode, clearing dust off the condenser grille, confirming the breaker, and photographing the model and serial number are all worth doing and cost you nothing — a good deal of what an appliance repair company charges for on a first visit is simply knowing which of those things matters. What you should not do is buy LG parts off a symptom, or authorise an LG compressor replacement on the strength of an error code. If the fridge and freezer are both warming and the refrigerator is not cooling after a five-minute reset at the breaker, that is the moment to have a service technician measure it properly. A failed compressor is a genuine possibility on these units — and if you are still inside the 10-year warranty window, it may be one LG pays for rather than you.

Confirm it is really a cooling fault

Before a single panel comes off: display checked for Demo or OFF mode, breaker and outlet verified, door seals and temperature settings confirmed, and actual cabinet temperatures measured against target — a healthy LG holds the fresh food around 33–39°F and the freezer between roughly -7 and 5°F. Every year we find units that were never broken, and that check costs you nothing.

Read every fault the machine is already reporting

The display code first, then the red LED on the inverter board, which blinks a fault count that the front panel never shows you. This is where most of the diagnosis is won or lost, because there is no LG display code that says "compressor failed" — a dead linear compressor very often reports nothing at all.

Force it to run and watch what happens

Test Mode 1 drives the compressor and every fan to maximum. That single step separates "the control is not asking for cooling" from "the control is asking and nothing is answering" — two completely different repairs that look identical from the kitchen.

Measure the compressor electrically

Resistance through the connector should read 7–14 ohms including the overload protector, and 6–9.2 ohms directly at the compressor terminals depending on which compressor is fitted. Good at the terminals but open at the connector means the overload has failed and the compressor is fine — a small part instead of a sealed-system job. A linear compressor also has a single winding, so an open reading on the third pin is normal. Technicians who apply three-phase inverter rules here condemn good compressors, and we have seen the bills.

Measure the drive that controls it

In Test Mode 1 we expect roughly 160–185 VAC leaving the drive to a running compressor and a 4–6 VDC command signal arriving from the main board, with running current around 0.5–0.7 amps. The drive output is a modulated square wave, not a clean sine wave, and cheap meters read it as nonsense — which is how people end up fitting three control boards to the same fault. We never put a direct test cord on an inverter or linear compressor; it destroys them permanently.

Prove it thermally, then with gauges

Resistance readings do not tell you whether a compressor is pumping. Temperature does. The discharge line and condenser should run about 20°F above ambient with the suction line cooler; all three sitting at room temperature means nothing is circulating. Gauges then end the argument — near-zero standing pressure is a leak, normal standing pressure that will not pull down is a compressor that has stopped compressing. This is the step that separates a real diagnosis from a parts swap, and it is why the job needs an EPA-certified technician.

Check airflow and defrost before anything is condemned

Condenser coil condition and fan operation, evaporator fan voltage and spin-up — 12 VDC with the door switch made and running within 30–45 seconds — frost pattern photographed, and a forced defrost run through Test Mode 3 while we listen for the heater. A warm fridge with a cold freezer nearly always ends here, and it is not a compressor repair.

WHAT STEP SEVEN LOOKS LIKE

That second photo is the part most people never see, and it is the reason we keep bringing it up: on many of these models the replacement compressor will not run correctly until the control board firmware is updated with LG service tooling. Skip it and the refrigerator can fail again months later, which is exactly how a customer ends up paying for two compressors. A parts-swapper does not own that module. We do.

Then you get the findings in writing before anything is opened up — what failed, what it costs in parts, what it costs in labour, and whether your warranty covers any of it. On a job this size the process matters as much as the parts: if we replace a compressor, the sealed system is brazed under flowing nitrogen, pressure-tested, evacuated below 500 microns, charged to the exact weight on the data plate, and the filter drier is replaced every single time. And we confirm both compartments pull down to target before we leave.

The LFXS and LFXC large-capacity models lead the list, and they make up the largest single block of the 31 model stems named in the LG class-action settlement. The compressor itself is stamped with its own designation — FLA075LANA, FLB075LANA, FLB075LBNA or FLS075LANA — and LG supplies replacements as a set assembly, most commonly TCA38151706 or TCA38091801, each of which supersedes half a dozen earlier part numbers. If one of these is four to seven years old and clicking, it's usually the compressor. The LRFXS and LRFXC lines are newer naming for the same architecture. One correction worth making here, because it costs people real money: Er rF is a refrigerator-compartment FAN code in LG own published list, not a compressor code. LG publishes no display code that says the compressor has failed. The LMXS and LMXC wide-body units often start their compressor history at just three or four years old. The LRMVS and LRMVC InstaView door-in-door models carry the same linear compressor under the premium exterior — and on these we always check the condenser fan motor first, because a seized condenser fan makes the compressor overheat and shut down with the exact same symptoms as a dead compressor, but a completely different repair.

Side-by-side, bottom- & top-freezer

On the side-by-side side, the LSXS and LSXC units share the same linear-compressor architecture and the same failure mode. Among bottom-freezer and top-freezer units, the LTCS models — including LTCS20020 and LTCS24223 — actually use a smaller linear compressor with a better track record than the French-door units, and when they act up it's usually the start relay rather than the compressor itself. The LBNC, LDCS, and LRFXS bottom-freezer units put the evaporator and defrost system in the freezer drawer, where the longer airflow path makes defrost failures hit harder.

What's the difference between the compressor and the start relay?

It depends which LG you have, and this is where a lot of bad advice starts. Either way we measure before we condemn: 7 to 14 ohms through the connector including the overload, 6 to 9.2 ohms at the compressor terminals. Good at the terminals but open at the connector means the overload failed and the compressor is fine.

My LG shows error code Er rF. Is that definitely the compressor?

No — and this is worth getting right before you spend money. In LG published code list, rF is a refrigerator-compartment fan motor error. It is one of the most commonly miscited codes online, along with dH, which is the defrost heater circuit, not the compressor. LG publishes no display code that means the compressor has failed. The only two codes that point at the sealed system are ER CH and ER CL, and LG raises those after roughly 24 hours of degraded cooling to cover a refrigerant leak, a compressor fault or a valve fault — without saying which. If anyone quotes you a compressor replacement off an error code alone, get a second opinion.

Was there ever an LG compressor recall?

No, and it matters that people stop repeating this. There has never been a Consumer Product Safety Commission recall of LG refrigerators for compressor failure. The only LG refrigerator recall on the CPSC record is from 2005, covering about 20,000 units for a condenser fan motor that could overheat — a different component and a different decade. What actually happened with the linear compressor was a class-action settlement, not a recall. Any page telling you your fridge is "under recall" is wrong, and you should weigh the rest of what it says accordingly.

What was the LG compressor class action, and can I still claim?

The case was Bentley v. LG Electronics U.S.A. in the US District Court for the District of New Jersey, consolidated from several suits and covering roughly 1.55 million owners of 31 French-door and side-by-side models produced between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2017. It settled in September 2020. The claims deadline was 5 February 2021 and the window is closed — no one can file now, and anyone telling you otherwise is not being straight with you. Newer complaints have been filed since, including one over Kenmore units built by LG and one filed in November 2025 over a newer LG model, but nothing there is decided and no class has been certified.

Why do LG compressors fail even after they have been replaced?

Usually because the reason the first one died was never found. The theory in the current litigation is that pinhole corrosion in the evaporator tubing lets refrigerant escape and air get in, over-pressuring the compressor until the discharge valve fails — meaning the compressor is the second failure, not the first. That is an allegation in a filed complaint rather than a proven finding, but it matches what we see: replace the compressor without locating the leak and you get another dead compressor. There is also a documented trap on many of these models — the replacement compressor requires a control-board software update using LG service tooling, and skipping it is a known source of repeat-failure complaints.
