Countertop vs. over-the-range vs. built-in — why it matters
Countertop microwaves
The simplest to service and the easiest replace-versus-repair call. On a $90 unit, a $200 magnetron repair rarely makes sense, and we'll say so plainly. On a higher-end countertop or a Panasonic inverter model, the math often flips toward repair.
Over-the-range (OTR) microwaves
Do three jobs — cook, vent your cooktop, and light it — so when the microwave dies, you also lose the range hood and the light, and replacing one means matching the exact cabinet cutout and venting. That's why a repair on an OTR unit is usually worth it even when the same failure on a countertop wouldn't be.
Built-in and microwave-drawer units
Trimmed into cabinetry with custom kits — GE Monogram, KitchenAid, Bosch, Sharp and Samsung drawers. Replacing one can run four figures before install, and the trim kit may be discontinued. These are exactly the units other companies won't touch, and the ones most worth saving.
The symptoms Tampa Bay describes on the phone
"It runs but doesn't heat."
The single most common microwave call. The turntable spins, the light's on, the timer counts down — but the food comes out cold. Usually the magnetron (the tube that produces the microwaves), the high-voltage diode, or the capacitor has failed, sometimes with a door-switch or control issue behind it. On a good OTR or built-in unit, this is a worthwhile repair; on a cheap countertop, often not, and we'll tell you which.
"It's completely dead — no light, no display."
Check the outlet and breaker first; OTR units often share a circuit that a GFCI trip can kill. If power's fine, it's usually a blown internal fuse (frequently taken out by a door-switch failure), the control board, or — May through October in the lightning capital of the country — surge damage.
"It sparks or arcs inside."
Stop using it. Arcing is usually a burnt waveguide cover, a chipped interior coating, or metal contact — a fixable but real issue you shouldn't run through. Turn it off and call.
"The door won't latch, or it stops when I open it."
The door interlock switches are a safety system that cuts power the instant the door opens, and they're one of the highest-wear parts on any microwave. A failing latch is also the most common cause of that blown fuse above.
"The buttons don't respond, or it turns itself on."
A failing touchpad or control board — sometimes a phantom-command glitch after a power surge, sometimes a genuine board fault. A microwave that starts on its own is one to unplug and have looked at promptly.
"The vent fan or light quit but it still cooks."
On an OTR unit these are separate systems — a fan motor, a lamp socket, or a control issue — and worth fixing so your cooktop keeps its ventilation.

Electrical supply and safety check
Outlet voltage, breaker and GFCI status, cord and internal fuse condition. Half of "completely dead" calls end here — and on an OTR unit this is where the shared-circuit trip gets caught.
Door and interlock inspection
