One company's numbers rather than an industry measurement, but the only public figures of their kind.
The warranty is gone and the wear has not started yet
This is the quietest stretch of a dishwasher's life, and when something does go wrong it tends to be electronic rather than mechanical: a touch panel that stops responding, a control board scrambled by a summer surge, a door switch that no longer tells the machine the door is shut. The moving parts are fine. What is failing is the part that decides.
J.D. Power's 2025 U.S. Appliance Reliability and Service Study, which surveys owners of appliances one to three years old, recorded 63 problems per 100 units for the best-scoring dishwasher brand and 64 for the next two, against a 69 average across all appliance types. Connected, app-enabled appliances scored worse at 87.
Hard water starts collecting the bill
Now the parts that touch water every cycle begin to show it. The filter has been ignored long enough to matter, the drain pump is pushing grease instead of water, and in Tampa the heating element and the spray jets are wearing a coat of scale. The classic call from this window is not a breakdown at all — it is "it runs the whole cycle and the dishes come out dirty." Nothing has failed. The water simply cannot get where it needs to go with any force.
Consumer Reports surveyed about 77,000 dishwashers bought between 2015 and 2025 and found roughly 21% broke down or stopped working as well as they should within five years of ownership.
Middle age, and the first honest conversation
Several thousand cycles are on the drain pump, the wash pump and the heating element. This is where a real part gives out rather than a clog, and where a second failure within a year stops being bad luck and starts being a pattern. It is also where the cumulative scale in a hard-water home no longer descales away — it has been baked onto the element for years.
Be careful with numbers you read for this window. We could not find a single published dataset that breaks out a dishwasher failure rate for years five through seven — the honest anchors are the 21% inside five years above, and an expected life of about nine years (NAHB) to about ten (the manufacturers Consumer Reports asked). Anyone quoting you a precise 6-to-7-year percentage is guessing.
At the design life — and that is not the same as finished
A mainstream dishwasher is at or past the age the industry plans for. Failures here are more likely to be the expensive ones — the wash motor, the control board, a tub or sump leak — and more likely to arrive in pairs. But a Bosch, KitchenAid, Miele or panel-ready built-in at ten years is often a completely different argument from a builder-grade unit at ten years, because of what replacing it actually costs.
The NAHB's life-expectancy study lists a dishwasher at 9 years; Consumer Reports puts it at about 10 based on what manufacturers told them. Both are averages, not expiry dates — we regularly repair machines well past both.
Every repair is now a considered decision
Past eleven years, parts availability starts to matter as much as the failure itself, and a machine that has had one major repair is likelier to need another. The exception is the built-in nobody wants to touch: a panel-ready or integrated unit cut into custom cabinetry, where replacing it means matching an opening, a panel and a plumbing run built around it. Those are worth saving far longer than a freestanding machine.
No public dataset tracks dishwashers this old — reliability surveys stop at five years (Consumer Reports) or three (J.D. Power). What we can tell you is what we see, and we will tell you plainly on the estimate.

Follow the water through one cycle
A dishwasher does five jobs in a row: it takes water in, throws it around, heats it, pushes it out, and dries what is left. Almost every complaint we hear is one of those five steps failing, and knowing which one it is tells you most of what you need to know. Tap a step.
It is also why we open the door on every visit rather than working from the symptom alone. A machine that will not drain and a machine that will not clean can share the same root cause, and the only way to know is to watch a live fill-and-drain cycle.
1. Fill — Water in

Six sentences we hear most weeks, in the words customers actually use. Read the one that matches yours — each says what usually broke behind that symptom and what gets tested before anything is sold. If more than one describes your machine, say so on the phone; two appliance issues together often point straight at the single cause, and being able to diagnose the issue before we arrive is what puts the right part on the truck the first time.
"There's standing water in the bottom and it won't drain."
The most common dishwasher call we take. The culprit is usually a drain pump that's weak or seized, a filter and sump packed with grease and food debris, a kinked or clogged drain hose, or a garbage-disposal knockout plug that was never removed at install. On many GE and LG models a power surge scrambles the control logic and the fix starts with a proper reset — but if the water keeps coming back, it's mechanical, and guessing at parts gets expensive.
"The dishes come out dirty or filmy."
Water is getting in but not doing its job. Usually a clogged spray arm, a worn wash pump or diverter, a water inlet valve barely filling, or — very common in our area — hard-water scale coating the heating element and jets. on our own service calls the scale we scrape off elements out in Wesley Chapel, Dade City and Zephyrhills is consistently heavier than what we find closer to the bay, and scale is the quiet reason a healthy dishwasher stops cleaning.
"It won't start, or it stops mid-cycle."
Check the breaker and any GFCI outlet under the sink first. If power's fine, it's usually the door latch or door switch (a safety interlock that must engage before the cycle runs), a failed control board, or — May through October in the lightning capital of the country — surge damage to the electronics.
"It's leaking onto the floor."
The source can be several places: the door gasket, a cracked or loose hose connection, the pump seal, or plain oversudsing when regular dish soap goes in by mistake. On a built-in, a slow leak hides under the cabinet and reaches the flooring before you see it, which is why we treat leaks as urgent and map the exact source through a live fill-and-drain test.
"It's throwing an error code."
LE, OE, E24, and the rest point at a circuit — a motor, a drain path, a door — but not always the failed part. We pull the error history in the service diagnostic mode of your specific model and test the circuit, because the code tells us where to look and hands-on testing tells us what actually broke.
"It smells, or the door is moldy."
Florida humidity plus a closed door is a mildew machine. Often it's a clogged filter and a biofilm in the sump rather than a failed part — we clean the system, check the drain path, and leave you a routine that keeps it from coming back.

Notice what tops the list. The most common dishwasher problem is not a dramatic breakdown — it is a machine that runs the whole cycle and gives you dirty dishes at the end. That is why we test the wash and heat systems on every visit instead of chasing only the symptom you called about.

In its more recent five-year reliability cut — about 77,000 dishwashers bought 2015–2025, measured over the first five years of ownership — Consumer Reports puts not cleaning at 9% and not drying and not draining at 7% each. The order barely moves; only the window does.
The parts most often replaced. Consumer Reports names four without ranking them: the water inlet valve, the wash arm, the drain pump and the circulation pump. From our own bench, the list we would add — door latch and interlock switch, door gasket, heating element, control board — is field experience rather than published data, and we will not dress it up as a statistic.
Tampa water is hard, and your dishwasher needs service more often because of it
This is the single biggest difference between a dishwasher in Tampa Bay and the same model in a soft-water city, and it is not our opinion — the City of Tampa publishes the numbers. Local water runs roughly 140 to 300 parts per million, or 8 to 17 grains per gallon, drawn mostly from the Hillsborough River, and it swings higher in the dry season. Anything above 120 ppm is officially hard, so Tampa water never drops below hard at all.
Inside a dishwasher that mineral load does two quiet things. It plates onto the heating element until the element can no longer push heat into the water, and it narrows the spray-arm holes until the jets lose their reach. Nothing has failed. The machine simply stops cleaning — which is exactly the complaint that tops the chart above.
The city's own advice for filming on dishes is worth following: enough detergent, rinse aid in the dispenser, and water reaching at least 120 degrees. Add a monthly filter clean and a descale when we tell you the element needs it, and a Tampa dishwasher behaves like one anywhere else. One honest note — the City of Tampa does not recommend softening; it calls that a matter of personal preference, and so do we.
