Stop opening the doors
Every open door dumps the cold you have left. This matters more than anything else on this list.
Move ice packs into the refrigerator section
They hold the fresh-food temperature far longer than the refrigerator can on its own once cooling stops.
Move the frozen food you planned to cook down into the refrigerator
It thaws where you can still use it, and it works as extra cold mass while it does.
Look at the back wall of the freezer
Heavy frost usually means a defrost or airflow problem, not a compressor problem. That is useful information for me before I arrive.
Check that the condenser area has airflow
If the unit is jammed into a tight alcove, or the coils are packed with dust and pet hair, it cannot shed heat.

How I Diagnose Appliance Problems
A parts swap is not a diagnosis. This is the order I actually work in — and why I can tell you what failed instead of guessing at it.
I listen
What happened, when it started, whether there was a storm or an outage, whether anyone worked on it before. Intermittent symptoms often tell the story before a meter confirms it.
I take temperatures first
Freezer and refrigerator, with an infrared thermometer, before I touch anything else. Real numbers in both compartments tell me whether this is airflow, defrost, or cooling — and they tell me in about thirty seconds. "It feels cold" and "it holds 37 degrees" are two different statements.
Visual and safety check
Leaks, burn marks, corrosion, damaged wiring, worn gaskets, clogged coils, blocked airflow.
Electrical testing
Power supply, switches, relays, capacitors, control boards, harnesses, sensors. A lot of appliance problems are electrical before they are mechanical.
Mechanical inspection
Motors, fans, pumps, valves, igniters, heating elements, compressors, drain systems.
Refrigeration deep-dive

Repair or Replace — How I Actually Decide
There's no single rule, and anyone who gives you one is selling something. It depends on the appliance.
Washers are where the math turns. They're not expensive to replace, so once a repair gets to about half the price of a new machine, most people go buy the new machine — and I'll tell you when you're at that line rather than talk you past it.
Refrigerators are different. They cost far more to replace, parts are usually available, and the failures I see most — coils, fan motors, control boards — are real repairs with years left on the other side. Refrigerators get repaired far more often than they get replaced, and that's the honest answer, not the convenient one.
Premium and built-in equipment is almost always worth diagnosing first. Sub-Zero, Wolf, Thermador, Viking, GE Monogram, built-in KitchenAid — the repair cost on a unit built into your cabinetry is usually a fraction of replacement, and "the part is discontinued" is not the end of the conversation.
When I say don't repair it. It's rare, but it happens. Sometimes a refrigerant leak can't be located — Samsung units are where this comes up — and at that point I'll tell you straight that chasing it isn't worth your money.
A customer once declined a washer repair, then called a week later to have a replacement hooked up. I got there and it was a 24-year-old machine someone had put out on the street with a note saying it worked. I tested it and told him no — I wasn't going to install it, because it wasn't worth his time and money.
That call cost me the job. It was still the right answer.
