Why is my Samsung washer not draining?
After years on the bench, the single most common Samsung washer drain call comes down to one thing: a clogged drain pump filter. Samsung front-load owners rarely know that filter exists because the access panel blends into the machine's lower front. When it packs with lint, coins, and hair, the drain pump can't push water through. That accounts for a big share of 5C and ND codes on front-loaders. The full list of causes, in order of frequency:
- Drain pump filter clogged (front-load, DIY 10-min fix)
- Error code 5C, SC, or ND triggered by sensor detecting drain failure
- Drain pump impeller jammed with debris
- Drain hose kinked or improperly mounted
- Door lock failure (front-load) preventing drain cycle from starting
- Detergent overload from using regular detergent in an HE machine
Samsung front-loaders are specifically prone to filter clogs. The filter location is not obvious, and Samsung does not make it prominent in owner materials.
Samsung washer drain error codes
5C / SC: drain error
Samsung's general drain error. The drain sensor detected water is not dropping at the expected rate. Same root causes as most brands: filter clog, kinked hose, jammed impeller, motor failure. The code tells you drain failed but does not identify which component.
ND: No Drain
Water level has not dropped within the expected window. Functionally the same as 5C. Start with the pump filter before anything else.
OC / OF: overflow
Water detected above safe level. Usually means drain failed during wash and water backed up. Do not keep running the machine. Resolve the drain failure first.
UE / UB: unbalanced load
Not a drain error on its own, but an unbalanced drum can abort the spin cycle before the drain completes. Redistribute the load and restart before chasing other causes.

How to fix a Samsung washer not draining
- Note the error code on the display. 5C, SC, ND, or OC.
- Run Smart Diagnosis via the SmartThings app. If your Samsung is connected, this identifies the failure remotely and narrows down the component.
- Towel out standing water. Lay towels and a shallow pan near the front before opening the filter cap.
- Clean the drain pump filter (front-load). The access panel is at the bottom front of the machine. Twist the filter counterclockwise and remove it. Clean out lint, hair, and coins. This resolves a large share of Samsung drain calls on its own.
- Check the drain hose for kinks. Pull the washer forward and straighten any sharp bends in the hose behind it.
- Power cycle. Unplug for 5 minutes. This resets latched error codes.
- Force a drain cycle. Select drain and spin only to test whether the pump responds.
