Why is my Whirlpool dishwasher not draining?

Whirlpool dishwashers, and their Maytag and KitchenAid siblings on the same platform, use a small chopper blade in the drain pump area that grinds food debris before it reaches the pump. When something hard gets in there, the blade jams. Symptoms: the dishwasher hums during drain but no water moves, sometimes with a grinding sound. Fix: pull the lower spray arm, remove the filter assembly, access the chopper blade housing, and remove the obstruction with needle-nose pliers. Clogged filter or coarse strainer

How to fix a Whirlpool dishwasher not draining

- Towel out the standing water. Clear the tub so you can work.
- Pull and clean the filter. On modern Whirlpool models, twist the cylindrical filter at the back of the tub counterclockwise, rinse, scrub, and reinstall.
- Check the chopper blade for obstruction. Remove the lower spray arm (twist or unscrew depending on model). The chopper blade area is underneath. Look for pits, glass, or label material. Remove with needle-nose pliers. This solves a large percentage of Whirlpool drain calls.
- Inspect the drain hose. Pull the toe kick and look at the hose route. Verify a high loop is in place before the disposal or sink. Straighten any kinks.

- Force a drain cycle. On modern Whirlpool dishwashers, press and hold the Cancel or Drain button for 3 seconds. The pump runs for 90 seconds. If no water moves, the pump has failed.
