Frigidaire Refrigerator Not Cooling? 7 Causes & Fixes

Anatoli Didenco

Why is my Frigidaire refrigerator not cooling?

After 20 years on the bench, I'd say the frozen defrost drain is the most underappreciated failure pattern on Frigidaire French door and bottom-freezer models. Water from defrost cycles can't drain, freezes in the trough, backs up as a sheet of ice on the freezer floor, and blocks airflow. The fridge warms up, and most owners assume the compressor is dead. It's usually not. That said, Frigidaire cooling problems cover a range. Here are all seven causes we see in Tampa Bay:

  1. Condenser coils clogged (most common DIY fix)
  2. Defrost drain frozen or blocked (Frigidaire-specific recurring issue)
  3. Compressor start relay or run capacitor failed
  4. Evaporator fan motor failed
  5. Defrost timer or heater failed
  6. Door gasket failed
  7. Compressor failure (older units)

Frigidaire is the second most common brand we see in Tampa Bay. Parts are widely available and most cooling repairs finish same-day.

Frigidaire-specific cooling failure patterns

Frozen defrost drain: Frigidaire signature issue

Frigidaire French door and bottom-freezer models have a documented pattern where the defrost drain freezes solid. Water from defrost cycles can't drain, freezes in the drain trough, and eventually backs up onto the freezer floor as a sheet of ice. That buildup blocks airflow and cooling drops. Fix: manually defrost the drain by pouring hot water into the drain hole at the back of the freezer with a turkey baster, and clear any debris. Sometimes a drain heater service kit needs to be installed to prevent recurrence — quoted after the $69 diagnostic.

Condenser coils clogged

Frigidaire condensers sit under or behind the fridge depending on the model. Tampa heat plus dust plus pet hair means fast fouling. Annual cleaning solves a large share of Frigidaire cooling calls without any parts at all.

Start relay or run capacitor failed

Frigidaire compressors use a relay and capacitor combination to start. Either can fail. Symptoms: clicking sound, compressor humming but not starting, or silence from the compressor section. Replacement is quoted after the $69 diagnostic installed.

Evaporator fan motor failed

The Frigidaire evaporator fan circulates cold air through both compartments. The tell: freezer stays cold but the fridge warms up. Open the freezer and listen for the fan. No sound means failed motor. Replacement quoted after the $69 diagnostic.

Defrost timer or heater failed

Older Frigidaire uses a mechanical defrost timer; newer models use electronic adaptive defrost. Either failure causes ice buildup on the evaporator coils. Heater replacement quoted after the $69 diagnostic, timer or control board quoted after the $69 diagnostic.

Door gasket failed

Frigidaire gaskets fail in 5 to 8 years, faster in Tampa's humidity. The dollar bill test tells you: if the bill slides out without resistance when the door is closed, the gasket has lost its seal. Replacement quoted after the $69 diagnostic installed.

Compressor failure

Past 8 to 10 years on base Frigidaire models, compressors start failing. Gallery and Professional series hold up to 10 to 13 years. Tampa heat accelerates wear on any unit not properly maintained. Compressor replacement quoted after the $69 diagnostic.

How to fix a Frigidaire refrigerator not cooling

Step through these in order.

  1. Verify temperature settings. Fridge should read 38 degrees F, freezer at 0 degrees F.
  2. Clean the condenser coils. Unplug, vacuum coils under or behind the unit. This resolves most Tampa Frigidaire cooling calls without any parts.
  3. Check for an ice sheet on the freezer floor. If present, you have the frozen defrost drain issue. Manual defrost: unplug for 24 to 48 hours with doors open, or pour hot water into the drain hole at the back of the freezer with a turkey baster.
  4. Inspect the door gasket. Dollar bill test. Reseat or replace if the seal is soft or cracked.
  5. Listen to the compressor. Clicking with no start points to a bad start relay or capacitor. A hum with no cooling may be a failing compressor. Silence usually means an electrical issue upstream.
  6. Check evaporator fan. Open the freezer and listen for the fan while the unit is running.
  7. Power cycle. Unplug for 5 minutes. Resets the control board after Tampa storm events and brownouts.
