The most important question isn’t “how deep is the scratch.” It’s “what is my fridge’s surface actually made of.” There are two completely different finishes that look almost identical on the showroom floor, and they demand opposite treatment:

  • Real (uncoated) brushed stainless can be refinished. You blend light scratches by going with the grain using the right Scotch-Brite pads, and they genuinely disappear.
  • Coated “smudge-proof” / fingerprint-resistant stainless has a thin clear protective layer over the steel. You cannot sand or polish this. Any abrasive that fixes real stainless will permanently wreck a coated finish, leaving a cloudy blotch that’s worse than the scratch — and this is the single most common stainless-steel disaster I get called about.

The whole game, in order:

  1. Test which finish you have first (there’s a simple cleaner test below). This is non-negotiable.
  2. Find the grain — the faint directional brushing lines. You always work along them, never across, never in circles.
  3. Match the method to the scratch: real stainless gets a graduated Scotch-Brite blend with the grain; coated finishes get gentle cleaning only, and deep damage gets a pro.
  4. Test on a hidden spot — bottom edge, side panel near the floor — before you touch the visible door.

Get the finish-type question right and the rest is patience. Get it wrong and no amount of elbow grease undoes it. That’s the difference between a satisfying afternoon and a refinishing bill.

Why this is the one repair where the prep matters more than the fix

Step 2: The finish test that decides everything (real stainless vs. coated)

Manufacturers sell two things that look nearly identical: bare brushed stainless, and stainless with a thin clear “fingerprint-resistant” or “smudge-proof” coating baked over it. The magnet sanity check. A magnet sticking tells you there’s ferritic steel under there, but it does not tell you whether a clear coat sits on top, so don’t rely on it alone. The cleaner-rag test is the one that actually answers the coating question.

Step 3 — Find the grain

Brushed stainless has a grain: faint parallel lines from the manufacturing brushing, usually running vertically on refrigerator doors and often horizontally on handles and trim. Catch the surface in the light at an angle and you’ll see it.

This matters because every stroke you make — cleaning, blending, polishing — goes along the grain, never across it and never in circles. The standard refinishing rule is to always follow the direction of the grain, using long continuous strokes rather than a scrubbing motion, or the finish becomes uneven. Cross-grain strokes cut new scratches at right angles to the existing ones, which is far more visible and much harder to undo. Find the grain before you start, and let it dictate every motion.

Step 4 — Clean the area

Whichever finish you have, start clean. Grit trapped under your cloth or pad becomes a fresh scratch. Mix a little mild dish soap in warm water, wipe the scratched area and a generous margin around it with a soft cloth (with the grain), then dry completely with a clean microfiber cloth. A dry, grit-free surface is the baseline for everything that follows.

Repair methods for REAL (uncoated) brushed stainless

Only after the rag test confirms bare stainless. Always work with the grain, always test on a hidden area first, and go gradually — you can always do another pass, but you can’t un-sand.

Method A — Stainless cleaner and polish (lightest marks). For the faintest surface scratches, a quality stainless cleaner/polish on a microfiber cloth, worked along the grain in long strokes, is often enough. Buff, wipe the excess, and check. This is the lowest-risk option and the right first try.

Method B — Baking soda paste (light scratches, gentle abrasive). A genuinely useful home remedy that appliance-care sources endorse: mix about 1/3 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup water, and 1/2 teaspoon of dish soap into a paste, apply to a damp soft towel, rub gradually harder along the grain, then buff with a damp clean towel. Baking soda is a mild enough abrasive to blend light scratches without aggressively cutting the finish. Keep the pressure even and the strokes long.

Method C — Scotch-Brite pads (the real-deal refinishing method). For more visible scratches on bare stainless, this is what professionals and serious DIYers actually use — and the specifics matter. The key pads are the maroon Scotch-Brite 7447 (more aggressive, equivalent to roughly a fine steel-wool grade) and the gray Scotch-Brite 7448 (finer, for the final satin finish). The refinishing method that comes up again and again: use maroon and gray Scotch-Brite pads with a wood block for even pressure, making long continuous strokes in the direction of the grain — start with the maroon pad until the scratches are mostly gone, then switch to the gray pad to restore a clean satin finish.

A few field details that separate a good result from a blotchy one. Wrap the pad around a flat wood block so your pressure is even — finger pressure alone leaves dips and shiny spots. Use water as a lubricant and rinse the surface between passes. Don’t camp on one spot; feather your strokes out across a wider area so the blended zone fades into the surrounding finish instead of leaving a halo. For deeper scratches, experienced refinishers step through progressive grits — coarse to fine Scotch-Brite, then 400, 600, and 1000-grit paper, always sanding with the grain and cleaning between each step. It’s genuinely a lot of patient, repetitive work, and that’s the honest part most slick videos leave out — on a real scratch, the finish you’re trying to match runs across the whole door.

A realistic expectation: blending a scratch means making it match the brushed texture around it, not erasing it like it never happened. Done with the grain, gradually, on bare stainless, the result can be genuinely invisible. Rushed or cross-grain, it just trades one flaw for a bigger one.

What to do with a COATED / smudge-proof finish

If the rag test came back clean, your safe options are limited, and that’s okay — limited and intact beats aggressive and ruined.

Clean gently with mild soap and water or a cleaner formulated for coated stainless, always with the grain. For very light marks that sit in the coating, a stainless polish designed to fill and mask can reduce their visibility without abrading. What you should not do is reach for any pad, powder, sandpaper, or “magic” abrasive — those are formulated for bare steel and will permanently cloud a coating. For a scratch that’s cut through the coating or gouged the steel beneath, the realistic options are professional refinishing/panel work or replacing the door panel. On premium built-ins especially, that’s a conversation worth having with someone who works on those units rather than a gamble with a pad.

When to call a professional

Bring in a pro when the scratch catches your fingernail and exposes bare or differently colored metal; when you have a coated/smudge-proof finish with damage past light surface marks; when the damage is widespread and a spot fix would leave the door looking patchy (an even refinish across the whole panel is a different skill than blending one scratch); when the scratch sits near door seals, the dispenser, handles, or control panels where abrasives can cause real damage; or when you’ve tried the gentle methods and they aren’t getting there. A few habits keep a stainless fridge looking right.
