Why is my Whirlpool washer not draining?
Whirlpool washers span Cabrio HE top-load (no agitator), Duet and Duet Sport front-load, and traditional top-load with agitator. After working on Whirlpool drain calls across Tampa Bay, the most common single cause is a jammed drain pump impeller. Coins, hair pins, and broken bra wires make it past the filter and lock up the pump. The machine hums during the drain cycle but nothing moves. The full list of causes:
- Drain pump motor failed or impeller jammed with debris
- Drain hose kinked, clogged with lint, or improperly installed
- Lid lock failure (Cabrio HE and newer top-load)
- Coin trap or drain pump filter clogged (Duet front-load)
- Drain solenoid failure (older mechanical direct-drive Whirlpool top-load)
- Control board fault preventing drain command
Whirlpool is the most common washer brand in Tampa Bay rentals and homes. Perfect Appliance Repair Tampa runs Whirlpool drain calls weekly.
Whirlpool-specific washer drain failure patterns
Drain pump impeller jam (universal Whirlpool)
Whirlpool drain pump impellers are small plastic blades that jam on coins, hair pins, broken bra wires, and small clothing items. Symptom: pump hums but no water moves. Access is through the bottom panel.
Cabrio HE lid lock failure
The Whirlpool Cabrio HE top-load, the no-agitator HE design, uses a lid lock for safety. When the lock fails or the sensor sticks, the washer will not drain or spin. Lid lock replacement is quoted after the $69 diagnostic and is a common Whirlpool service call.
Duet front-load coin trap clog
The Whirlpool Duet front-load has a coin trap or drain pump filter behind a small access panel at the bottom front of the machine. It clogs with lint, hair, and coins. Cleaning takes 10 minutes but most owners do not know it exists. Many "failed pump" calls are just a clogged filter.
Drain hose kinked or improperly installed
Whirlpool requires the drain hose routed with a high loop or air gap. Kinks behind the unit, a drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe creating a siphon, or no air break all cause drain problems regardless of whether the pump itself is functioning.
Drain solenoid (older direct-drive models)
Older Whirlpool direct-drive top-load machines from before 2010 used a drain solenoid plus clutch system. Solenoid failure prevents drain. Replacement is quoted after the $69 diagnostic.
How to fix a Whirlpool washer not draining
- Towel out standing water. Clear the tub before inspecting anything.
- Pull the washer and inspect the drain hose. Straighten any kinks and verify the high loop or air gap is in place.
- Check the coin trap (Duet front-load). Open the bottom front access panel and twist the filter counterclockwise to remove it.
- Check the lid lock (Cabrio HE). Verify the lid closes fully. If a lid alarm sounds constantly, the lock has failed.
- Inspect the drain pump impeller. Access through the bottom panel and remove any visible debris.
- Power cycle. Unplug for 5 minutes to reset the control board.
- Force a drain cycle. Select drain and spin only and observe whether the pump responds.
