Why is my Kenmore dishwasher not draining?
Kenmore is a store brand, not a manufacturer. Different Kenmore dishwashers are built by Whirlpool, LG, Frigidaire, or GE depending on model number. The first step in fixing a Kenmore drain issue is identifying the actual OEM behind your unit: the design, parts, and troubleshooting differ.
Kenmore dishwasher model prefixes (the digits before the period):
- 665.xx: Whirlpool-built (most common Kenmore dishwasher in Tampa Bay)
- 587.xx: LG-built
- 630.xx: Frigidaire-built
- 363.xx: GE-built
Once you know the OEM, the failure patterns and fixes match that brand. Most common Kenmore dishwasher drain failures across all OEMs:
- Chopper blade jam (Whirlpool-built Kenmores)
- Clogged filter at the tub bottom
- Drain hose kinked or improperly mounted
- Garbage disposal knockout plug
- Drain pump motor failure
- OEM-specific error codes (LG-built shows OE, IE; Frigidaire-built shows i30 or HF)
Perfect Appliance Repair Tampa works on all Kenmore variants: we identify the OEM first, then apply the right diagnosis.
Identifying your Kenmore and OEM-specific drain patterns
Find your Kenmore model number
Model number sticker is inside the door, on the side of the door panel, or on the side wall of the tub. Look for a number formatted like 665.13803N712 or 587.15402401. The first three digits before the period identify the OEM.
Whirlpool-built Kenmore (665.xx): most common
By far the most common Kenmore dishwasher in Tampa Bay. Uses the Whirlpool chopper blade drain system. Symptoms and fixes are identical to Whirlpool: chopper blade jam (the most common single failure), clogged filter, drain hose kink, drain pump motor failure past year 6-8. Whirlpool parts fit directly. See our Whirlpool dishwasher not draining guide for the detailed flow.
LG-built Kenmore (587.xx)
Premium Kenmore Elite dishwashers are often LG-built. Uses LG's drain design and error codes. Common error codes: OE (drain error), IE (inlet error). LG drain pumps and filters apply. See our LG dishwasher not draining guide for the detailed flow.
Frigidaire-built Kenmore (630.xx)
Less common but still in service in Tampa Bay homes. Uses Frigidaire's drain design with cylindrical filter and external drain pump. Error codes: i30 (water in safety pan), HF (high temperature). Frigidaire parts apply. See our Frigidaire dishwasher not draining guide for the detailed flow.
GE-built Kenmore (363.xx)
Rare. Uses GE drain pump designs from the era of manufacture. GE parts apply.
Common across all Kenmores
Regardless of OEM: clogged filter is universal, drain hose kinks happen on every brand, and the garbage disposal knockout plug is the same issue across all dishwashers. Start troubleshooting with these universal causes before going OEM-specific.
How to fix a Kenmore dishwasher not draining
Step through these in order.
- Find your model number. Sticker on the door or tub side. Note the first three digits before the period (665 = Whirlpool, 587 = LG, 630 = Frigidaire, 363 = GE).
- Towel out standing water. Clear the tub so you can work in there.
- Pull and clean the filter. All modern Kenmore dishwashers have a removable filter at the back of the tub bottom. Twist counterclockwise to release, rinse, scrub, reinstall.
- Check the chopper blade (665.xx Kenmore only). If your Kenmore is Whirlpool-built, pull the lower spray arm and inspect the chopper blade area for obstructions.
- Check the drain hose route. Pull the toe kick, look for kinks, verify high loop is in place.
- Verify the disposal knockout plug. If a new disposal was installed, confirm the knockout was removed.
- Check the display for error codes. OEM-specific codes tell you a lot: OE on LG-built means drain error, i30 on Frigidaire-built means water in safety pan.
- Force a drain cycle. Method depends on OEM. Whirlpool-built (665): hold Cancel/Drain for 3 seconds. LG-built (587): press and hold Start for 5 seconds. Look up your specific model.
When to call a Kenmore dishwasher repair tech
If basic troubleshooting doesn't restore drain function, it's time for a tech. The challenge with Kenmore: a tech needs to identify the OEM before ordering parts. Perfect Appliance Repair Tampa has experience with all four Kenmore OEMs and brings the right parts based on model number identification before the visit.
Kenmore dishwasher drain pump replacement costs in Tampa vary by OEM:
- Whirlpool-built (665.xx) — quoted after the $69 diagnostic total
- LG-built (587.xx) — quoted after the $69 diagnostic total (LG parts cost more)
- Frigidaire-built (630.xx) — quoted after the $69 diagnostic total
- GE-built (363.xx) — quoted after the $69 diagnostic total
Repairability depends on the underlying OEM. Whirlpool-built and LG-built Kenmore Elite are worth repairing through year 10. Older Frigidaire-built and GE-built Kenmores past year 8 sometimes hit a wall.
